Agenda for Mississippi

A Note About Our Approach to the Issues

 1. PRO-LIFE

AFA of MS is proud to support pro-life work in Mississippi.

 2.  GAMBLING

We oppose any legislation designed to further expand gambling in any form.

Gov. Haley Barbour stated during the 2003 campaign that he would not support any expansion of gambling in this state.  In the 2003 Voter Guide, he is quoted, "While there are social problems associated with and aggravated by gambling, the casino licensees have abided by the rules established by the State, and both employment and tax revenues are far in excess of what was initially anticipated.  It is important, however, that gambling not be expanded beyond those counties in which it is allowed now, and the State must not establish a lottery."  However, after Hurricane Katrina, the first item on the agenda was to expand gambling by allowing inland casinos.  Before almost any aid was approved in any other way, the gamblers had their way with our state legislature and the governor signed it into law in the aftermath of fear of the people produced by the destruction of the hurricane.  The gamblers knew when to make their move!

What did our country's founders think about public religious expression?

AFA of MS will address a broad range of issues important for Christians in Mississippi to have accurate and complete knowledge about so that they can make informed decisions when it's time to go to the polls.  AFA of MS also acknowledges that "repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ" (Acts 20:21) should be the most important goal of any Christian organization.  AFA of MS believes that we are to be "salt and light" (Matthew 5:13-16) and that we must practice what we preach.  In addition to avoiding idolatry and immorality, Christians must preach the gospel to everyone everywhere, regardless of what any government says to the contrary. The apostles made that historic declaration: "We ought to obey God rather than men" (Acts 5:29) and their example has been followed by Christians down through the centuries.  From the martyrs under pagan Rome to those who smuggle Bibles into Islamic or communist lands today, Christians have persevered, and though forbidden by the authorities, the apostles persisted in preaching the gospel.  Denouncing sin, calling for state and national repentance, and preaching the gospel in convicting power is of utmost importance while also addressing political issues. As Christians, we must call for repentance not only for homosexuality, adultery, child abuse, pornography, gambling, and abortion, but for more subtle forms of rebellion against God and rejection of Christ. Too often, the church has failed to preach all of the truth. False teachings abound and it is hypocritical for the church to protest any kind of sin while tolerating within itself the same or similar.
